EU adopts new legislation on animal experimentation

A missed opportunity to give greater protection to the millions of animals used in experiments across Europe

The European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE), a coalition of key animal protection groups across the EU, has today declared the adoption of the new Directive a missed opportunity to introduce measures that would have given greater protection to animals used in experiments.

BUAV expresses disappointment at a lack of progress by UK government in reducing animal suffering

The BUAV welcomes any decrease in the numbers of animals used in experiments in the UK. However, we are extremely disappointed by the lack of a meaningful drop in the number of animals used in research in the UK during 2009, following the massive 14% increase

A missed opportunity for panel of MEPs to improve provisional new EU law on animal testing

The ECEAE (European Coalition to End Animal Experiments) has criticised Members of the European Parliament Agriculture Committee for missing an opportunity to introduce key amendments to the future EU legislation on animal experiments. The vote on amendments destined to clarify important rules on animals used in laboratories took place today during the last Agriculture committee before summer recess.

EU Council accused of issuing misleading public statement on animal testing

The European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE), a coalition of animal protection groups across Europe, has accused the EU Council of Ministers of issuing a highly misleading press statement about the changes to the animal experiments directive (Directive 86/609). The ECEAE has made a formal complaint of maladminstration to the European Ombudsman against the Council.

MEPs get ready to back an ineffective provisional new law on animal testing

The ECEAE has criticised Members of the European Parliament Agriculture Committee for missing an opportunity to discuss key issues on the future law on the protection of animals used in laboratories. At the meeting which took place on 28th June, Ms Elisabeth Jegge (Rapporteur for the Parliament) qualified the compromise agreed with the Council of Ministers as balanced yet imperfect.
